F# performs like C#, but being a functional language, has interactive scripting (similar to Python) but is rooted in the strong type inference and safety that other functional languages like ML focus on. Being in the CLR means you can build certain parts of your application in F# and then reference them from other languages, the same way VB.NET and C# interoperate.

Only a week after returning from a 30-day trip through the interior of the American heartland, we found ourselves in Merry Old England speaking at and attending the VBUG Winter Conference. Carl moderated a Code-Off in which four developers each created a user interface for a system of web services, each using a different technology. They then showed off those applications in a very small window of time. Immediately following this, we interviewed them in front of the audience. We also spoke one-on-one to Graham Parker, one of the code-off developers, about VBUG and the UK .NET community.

This week we had four program managers for the Evangelism team: Scott Burmester, Steve Cellini, Carter Maslan, and Jeff Sandquist. The topic? Whidbey! They talked about new features in Whidbey, the next version of Visual Basic expected out in 2004 sometime, including some features that nobody knows about outside of the Alpha program! You'll have to listen to find out what they are!
Carl and Mark talked about the things they like and have disliked about VB in the past, and how VB.NET has really brought the language to the forefront of the serious development community. As well, they ask some interesting questions like, "what parts of the .NET Framework were written in VB.NET" and other goodies. There are plenty of laughs as well. Carl and Mark have an enlightening talk with Juval Löwy about COM+ Enterprise Services, and how they relate to .NET. If you thought Enterprise Services (COM+) was just about Transactions and Object Pooling, you've got to check this out. Juval believes that we will all be using Enterprise Services in the near future because it will be time-prohibitive (and therefore cost-prohibitive) not to do so.

This week Carl and Mark interview Billy Hollis, noted speaker and .NET expert. Billy and Rockford Lhotka had the first VB.NET book on the market from Wrox Press. Since then, Billy has taught VB.NET classes and done consulting for major companies, as well as authoring (or co-authoring) at least 8 books on .NET.
He is the MSDN Regional Director (RD) for Tennessee, and was RD of the year in 2001. He authors many articles, including a regular column at MSDN called Adventures in VB.NET
Billy talks about ASP.NET vs Smart Client applications, Remoting, and offers lots of great advice and information to VB.NET programmers.
